Thanks for listening to the HBR IdeaCast. This creates a problematic cycle, one that erodes our self-confidence. And shes here to lay those out for us. Its not necessarily just about thought processes and habits, but it is such an emotional process too. That was one way that it could be helpful. And uncertainty is one of those emotions that people really do avoid. CURT NICKISCH: You mentioned earlier that when people do the tasks they know, those are often the easiest to do, and they put off the harder ones. You build a lot more skills. A lot of studies haven't found any difference and sincesome more recent evidence does suggest that men tend to procrastinate a little bit more than women. CURT NICKISCH: Yeah. People have a comfort level with tasks that they do all the time. ALICE BOYES: Yeah. But I think this was the first time I really understood how identifying emotions could lead to something in the article you call psychological flexibility. The Psychology of Procrastination: Why We Delay and How to - LinkedIn So we talk about sagacious delay where on the surface when somebody puts something off, we might look at them and say, Hey, they're procrastinating, or we might even look at our own behavior and just because it's a delay and we're not doing what we know we should be doing, we might say, Well, I'm procrastinating. But if you sort of look below the surface, it may be that maybe you haven't started that report because you're waiting to hear back with some key information that's essential for you to get going on this and if you started without that information, you actually would be wasting a lot of time. I'm really thrilled to be here. Mills: In prepping for this conversation, I of course had to go to Dr. Google and find out who are famous procrastinators, and there are lists, as you've probably seen them, and they include luminaries like the Dalai Lama, Frank Lloyd Wright, Herman Melville, Leonardo DaVinci. For good! Identify the emotions you feel that are associated with past tasks you havent completed. YANSS 253 - The psychology behind the world's greatest cons, . What's the difference between procrastinating and simply deferring something for another time? What theyre much better at is actually using their emotions as fuel for their goals. So my strategy and my system is kind of tailored to that. Using science and storytelling, Hidden Brain . Since becoming aware of the problem is one of the first ways we are able to change, mindfulness helps us be more aware of our actions in general. There might be some really monumental delayers out there, but they could be sagacious delayers, wise delayers who are doing it with purpose. Its probably going to be really expensive. So it's actually quite high in college and university samples. One is quickly testing assumptions. So think, again, using your values is a really good thing there. And any strategy that you can use, whether it targets behavior or emotions or thoughts is probably going to work no matter what you see the primary root of it as being, because those things are so interlinked. A couple of names popped up, Margaret Atwood, J.K. Rowling for example, who are also highly productive. You actually can't because if we look at the definition, it's got to be something they intended to do. Where can you place it? Boyes wrote the book Stress-Free Productivityand the HBR article How to Stop Procrastinating.. Yes, procrastination. Im Curt Nickisch. This is called procrastination. For best results, make your first step . Because putting off those kinds of things tends to cause big problems, like if your air conditioner breaks in the middle of summer or whatever it is, its useful to have a generic system that you can use for approaching tasks that you dont do frequently, tasks that feel out of your wheelhouse, novel tasks. You're going to hand in things late or you're not going to do your best work. So we think about having systems for tasks we do all the time, but we often dont think about having a system for novel tasks. And procrastination is a form of delay, so we can say that all procrastination is delay, but not all delay is procrastination. And really what that means is that procrastination is a very specific type of delay and how researchers in the field, how we define it so that we can go out and explore what are the consequences and causes of procrastination, we define procrastination as an unnecessary form of delay. Mills: Well, somewhat related to my last question, are there cultural differences among people who procrastinate? The research psychologist, author and DePaul University professor sits down for a truly delightful exploration of why we procrastinate, how prevalent it is, when it becomes harmful, some myths about procrastination, why it's similar to gambling, how decision-making can feel paralyzing, how to trust your own abilities, and most importantly -- what There was actually a really interesting study that I just read in the last few days that said that doing mindfulness meditation reduces peoples feelings of guilt, but it also causes them to be less willing to do reparative behaviors. Fuschia Sirois, PhD: Oh, thanks for having me, Kim. And thats what we often think first about. And how can we be more conscious of that? You get rewarded for doing that. Sometimes its just making sure you dont make that cognitive error, or catching the cognitive error when youre making it, as recognizing that its almost like theres an inverse correlation there between how awkward and yucky things feel. It will also help to be able to clarify your goalsdaily, weekly, monthly. Start strength training, or another disciplined physical task. Well, I want to thank you for joining me today, Dr. Sirois. And in the workplace as well. It gives you that quick fix. And this is where some people can get caught in the trap of procrastination as almost a chronic habit or way of dealing with these unpleasant tasks. And they should have an explicit system. So people who are prone to procrastination do tend to use more social media, tend to be engaged with their digital distractions. But if it were that simple, it wouldnt be a problem anymore. So that's one project that I'll be working on and looking at sort of existing research out there to see if the mean levels of procrastination, chronic procrastination that is, have gone up, especially in student samples over the last couple of decades. I mean it's really bizarre. Psychologists have identified various drivers of procrastination, from low self-confidence to anxiety, a lack of structure, and, simply, an inability to motivate oneself to complete unpleasant. ALICE BOYES: It can be both. Sirois: It has a huge impact on it and I think this is a thing a lot of people don't think about when they think about procrastination. How does procrastination affect people's lives and their mental and physical health? (Message automatically replaces this text). She also wrote the HBR article, How to Stop Procrastinating. But it still creates a bit of a problem of not having a habit of getting on and doing that other thing. That if you notice a funny mole or you notice a funny lump or something, or change in your bowel habit of it or whatever it is, that is an area where procrastination can be deadly. How to Be a Productive Procrastinator : NPR So I think it's whatever your fancy is, something to distract you from the emotions that you're not dealing with about the tasks that you should be doing, which is going to bed and maybe it's because you haven't processed what went on in that day. What purpose does it serve? So the classic example is the student who the only time they ever clean their dorm room is when they should be studying for exams. Ill just put that off and hope that it goes away.. Fear of failure, fear of . So ambivalent emotion is when youre feeling fearful and exhilarated all at the same time or any combination of intense positive and intense negative emotions. We feel guilty about it. If you want a behavior to require less self control, then make it a consistent habit. Its the idea that you can use your emotions as fuel for your goals, that you dont need to reduce your negative emotions. If it was a country where the tolerance for procrastination was quite low, that might certainly have an impact, but I think it's about the acceptability as well. And recognizing that actually if youre doing things that are creative, if youre doing things that are hard, youre going to need more recovery time. Procrastination can also be a result of depression. And one of the researchers there, she mentioned that especially in the workplace in Peru, it's like people procrastinate quite regularly because they see their managers and their bosses procrastinating so it sets the standard and everyone thinks it's okay. I can say yes and no because no to one type, but yes to another. And there are more steps that are part of my process. And I think first thing I have to say is that perfectionism isn't sort of a single entity. Theres no pictures. So I sort of lay that out there because it's slightly different there. You build new relationships, for example, by working with a new collaborator versus with someone youve already worked with 20 times before. Mills: Given that these famous alleged procrastinators maybe weren't procrastinators at all, I thought it was interesting that there weren't a lot of women on the list that I saw. We protect the self temporarily by avoiding the task that threatens it. But that again, it's an emotion regulation issue. And thats something that people with psychological flexibility are able to do. Thank you for listening. Its a really false image. CURT NICKISCH: So lets start down the line here and go through three different areas where we can really make a difference when it comes to changing how we work. So anywhere along that spectrum of a task that makes us feel that, these negative emotions in one form or another, those are the tasks that we're more likely to procrastinate on. Its been a popular topic. And we know that self-compassion can be a very powerful tool for regulating negative emotions, and that's another approach too, especially if we're really struggling and just sayit's not giving yourself a free pass. And we had 40-some-odd studies, it included 10,000 people and when we looked at the links between chronic procrastination and perfectionism, we indeed found that individuals who were more prone to chronic procrastination also scored higher on this measure of the self-critical perfectionism. So theres a great HBR article about how diverse teams tend to do better work, but they also tend to feel like they have more conflict. CURT NICKISCH: Yeah. What are you working on now? Accept the emotion that is there, have self-compassion and forgiveness for the emotional experience you had. Download a good meditation, or use the app Headspace, and practice it daily to develop a habit of mindfulness. People often come to therapy wanting to change somebody else. Best Procrastinate Podcasts (2023) - Player And so it's not surprising that we find that people chronically procrastinate also tend to put off engaging in those health promoting behaviors that would really help their health overall. CURT NICKISCH: One of the really fascinating things that jumped out at me in your work was this idea of emotional granularity. Sirois: There is indeed a difference. So the idea is, okay, well, if you have habits of doing your boring tasks, then you wont need as much self-control to get those done. Yeah. They tend to also have more insecure job status, in other words, they're jumping from job to job and they never really advance much, and they actually make less money than people who don't chronically procrastinate. They have a zero tolerance sort of policy for any sort of mistakes or anything not going correctly and so they tap out. In psychology, we never think of cognition, emotions and behavior as being separate. And I think that lays into the final part of the definition, which is that we engage in this type of unnecessary voluntary delay of these intended tasks despite knowing there will be negative consequences for ourselves and others. As we build a habit of procrastinating, we develop false beliefs that worsen the habit. And the research bears this out. It would be more accurate to say, "I work under pressure." Avoidance brings immediate relief from the distress associated with the task. And then there are other countries where efficiency and productivity are highly valued. Alice Boyes, a former clinical psychologist and author, says breaking the habit is more than simply a matter of discipline. And then only later maybe realize that a different way of approaching it wouldve been more useful. Often it is. You can learn about my research at procrastination. So even though I dont like providing tech help, I like the idea that I will compensate for her weaknesses and she will compensate for mine, and that well support each other through that. So these mainly are personal strategies. So thats obviously a huge problem, right? And they showed the data suggesting that their program worked and they showed the mean scores on this measure of chronic procrastination at the beginning of them coming to the clinic and at the end so they could say, Oh look, there's some improvement. And I remember standing there with a colleague of mine and we both were looking at the scores on this measure of procrastination at time one, and the level of procrastination that they found troubling was well below the average national mean for the procrastination in the U.S. and Canada, but this was troubling in Germany. Mills: All right, well, let's not put it off any longer. CURT NICKISCH: Whats your understanding of procrastination? ALICE BOYES: Yeah, its actually just what I was talking about before. Sometimes its a much deeper seated thing than that. Humans are terrible at predicting the future. Identify the emotions behind tasks you felt you didnt excel in, or that didnt turn out the way you wanted them to when you did complete them. It's not like procrastinators are sitting around lazy, they're doing other things. Why is procrastination so tied up with guilt and shame, even though it's something nearly everyone does? I think that would kind of level the playing field for many people as well in terms of whether they were able to be productive or whether they found themselves falling into a trap of procrastination. However, we can strengthen our willpower through routine exercise. When we are novice drivers, we have to think carefully about checking the mirrors and all the steps. Im Curt Nickisch. overcome the tendency to put things off. Then you need a snack. And I guess here we're talking about chronic procrastination as opposed to procrastinating from time to time. One of the main reasons people procrastinate is fear. The trick is to have a lot of less important things on your list, so that by doing the less important things, you can avoid doing . Im not advocating anyone adopt my system. They're ones that we find unpleasant, aversive and that can range the full spectrum from just simply boring to gut wrenching, nerve wracking and anxiety provoking. So the classic example thats always used in any intro psych textbook is driving: that once were not a novice driver anymore, whenever we sit in the driver seat of a car, we go through a sequence of behaviors without really even thinking about what we are doing. So rather than frame it in terms of productivity, which I think feeds into a lot of our social norms about what we should and shouldn't be doing and how much we should and shouldn't be doing, I'd rather frame it around whether you're reaching your goals or not or do you have all these things you started and never finished, do you have all these unfulfilled goals that you just never got round to doing because of fear of failure or just worried it wasn't going to be good enough or worried whether you could manage maybe some of the challenges that you might face when you engage with that task? Like if you feel guilt. Sometimes we need that incubation period. I'm so glad that we did not put off this discussion. I just think of one to mitigate against each and that keeps it contained and it satisfies my anxiety. It is often based on the lie that we should be able to complete something without assistance. ALICE BOYES: Yeah, Im not sure that its that black and white. Especially if it was something that you either felt really intimidated by or you had put off for a long time and finally got around to doing it. And there might be some generational influences there too. It's really about the emotions that are associated with the task and not necessarily the unpleasantness of the task. And this makes some sense if we think about how harmful stress is to our bodies. . But really just the more you learn about emotions, the more your psychological knowledge is, the easier this it is to work around all this and not be scared of negative emotions.
