What designating a rifle as a sniper rifle, or even counter-sniper rifle does do, is give the gun-grabbers one more thing to latch onto and try and ban. The barrel wear should not be as much of concern within 500 yard ranges as you only need 1.5 MOA, or so, to be accurate enough. Of course, no matter how a rifle is made, if it wont shoot accurately, it is of no use to the man or woman behind the trigger. After I started reloading and found the magic round, it averaged for the next 2000 rounds (before I burned it out) a .34 MOA all targets good bad and ugly between 100 to 800 yards. Thats a tight enough group to kill anything worth putting in my freezer. 100 yard 3 group @ .625, 200 yard 5 group @ 1.3 and 300 yard 10 group (in 56 seconds) @ 2.8. Fired 15 or 20 at 1000 yds. When you find a variety of ammo that shoots consistently in your bolt-action hunting rifle, then stock-up on it. But the fact is that nobody in the top 10 of the Precision Rifle Series used a hinged floorplate to feed their rifle, and none of them ran stock bolt knobs, or factory stocks. It might be the Swedish steel, or because the bullet as a long bearing surface. For example the newer 6.5mm 150 grain Serria BTHP can be run out a .260 Remingtion at 2,697 fps. Apparently, that was back when men still made noises of large hardened steel bearings bouncing off each other whilst they walked to the firing line. I dont know why this one isnt a lights-out shooter like the 6.5. It takes every bit of 500 yards to for the Creedmore to catch up with the .308 energy wise, but theres two ways to look at that. Im actually a bit shocked, because Im able to pull 0.7MOA groups with a piston-driven semi auto, while this one cant even do that. Round #3 was 2 higher, but I attribute that to the guy shooting next to me kicking my mat that the bi pod was standing on as I pulled the trigger. PMAGs of course are cheaper, but the only chassis system that will take those is Magpuls new Hunter line. So lets drop it in a Chassis so that it becomes a Wonder Rifle Again, a Canadian Company, MDT offers chassis from that $400 range up to about $1000 depending on the features you want. I cant believe some of these range puffs, my daughter loves shooting my 1953 vintage marlin 30-30 lever, and consistently groups at 1 or less at 50 yards, buckhorn sights to boot. However, as you well know, the 7.62 NATO works just fine, and is the smartest cartridge to own. Shot 1/2 moa at a hundred and two hundred yds. It still does not translate into criticizing the rifle for not being something that it was never intended to be. If every bullet leaves the barrel at exactly the same speed it doesnt really matter how much the muzzle whips around because every bullet will be thrown off in the same direction. Just something to think on. The military flash hider on the M14/M1A is superb if you can arrange it. Had to go buy a large expensive gun case to return to ruger couldnt fold stock to get it back in factory box. You can read it all on the Ruger web site. More importantly, 6.5 long-range rifle is hands down an easier bullet to shoot in the wind. Ill swap the Ruger butt stock for a PRS so it feels as close to identical to my AR as it can. Another a savage trophy hunter in 308, scoped with a Nikon 39. However, this rifle was designed mainly for high-powered rifle competition shooting, plain and simple. After a lot of shooting, I could probably produce groups as small as the 168-gr load, with the slightly heavier load in all honesty, I think in the end, you could really call it a tie between the rounds. Happy Hunting. The best five-shot group was a touch under .6 MOA. BTW, cold bore it shot dead center and 1.5 high with the R700 setup at 100 yards. We knew this was not going to work at this range with the different velocity and bullet weight, and the notorious 3 MOA accuracy of military ball ammunition. Accuracy was so bad after I bought it I sent it back to Ruger. Promise! I have not fired a round through it yet and may not get to until Spring as winters are deep here in the Bridger Mountains of SW Montana. In the 29 barrel of the M96, the bullet might be 50 fps faster. is a much better option. - But it can sure work as one, even though it is about 10 pounds unloaded without a scope it could be carried afield for hunting.
